GAEILGE AGUS SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE

Gaeilge

Gaeilge (Irish) is taught every day in all classes in Firies National School. An emphasis is put on using the language in fun and active ways through speaking and listening skills. Children play games, sing songs, take part in dramas and learn rhymes. They will learn vocabulary for every day topics and themes like family, food, clothes, shopping and special occasions.

Each week, students who put a special effort into using their Irish are awarded ‘Gaeilgeoirí na Seachtaine’.

Further up the school, children will also read and write in Irish. They will develop their skills so that they can hold a conversation with their friends and speak confidently on different topics.

Seachtain na Gaeilge

Seachtain na Gaeilge has been an exciting event every year in Firies National School! It is a celebration of the Irish language with special events taking place each day across the week.

We have had Céilí Mór dances with all classes performing traditional Irish set dances. Students have made Ciorcail Chomhrá (Conversation Circles) and met with other classes to discuss different topics all through Irish. PE lessons are done through Irish and classes have teamed up to play Gaeilge Guess Who?, Bingo and Jenga.

For Seachtain na Gaeilge 2020, we even had our own radio station that would play Irish poems, songs and dramas at lunchtimes!

Useful apps and websites

There are plenty of good websites for children to practise their Gaeilge at home. These sites have interactive games, songs, stories and video. Have a look!
