GAA 5 Star Centre

The GAA 5 Star Centre initiative was first introduced in the 2017-2018 school year. Firies National School was one of the first schools in Kerry to participate in this great initiative. The aim of the GAA 5 Star Centre is that every child gets 60 minutes of moderate to vigerous activity per week throughout the 26 weeks of the school year. From early in the academic year our committee undertook to organise a range of activities during lunch time and P.E. the activities included have a ball, fun and run, strike it, catch and kick, skill challenge and go games. The staff in Firies were provided with after school training on how to administer these activities. The entire process proved hugely successful. The children greatly benefited from the range of activities. There was an improvement in their fitness, skill level and interest in team sports. Firies National School were presented with their 5 Star GAA flag in June 2019 in the Centre of Excellence in Currans by Coaching and Development Officer with Kerry GAA, and former Firies and Kerry footballer, Donal Daly.
