Amber Flag

Amber Flag

We are very excited to announce that here at Firies N.S. we are embarking on a new adventure. Following on from the success of the Green School Flag and Active School Flag Initiatives, we are now taking on the challenge of obtaining an Amber Flag.

Recently, Minsters Jan O’Sullivan and Kathleen Lynch jointly launched Well-Being in Primary Schools- Guidelines for Mental Health Promotion. This is the result of a joint collaboration between the Department of Education and Skills and the Health Service Executive, with the aim of promoting mental health and well-being in primary schools.

It is recognised in these guidelines that positive mental health and well-being enables young people to lead fulfilling lives. Home and family are recognised as the primary source of nurturing and support for children. However, mental health and well-being are recognised as everyone’s concern and involves the whole school community, parents/guardians and others involved in day to day school life. Positive mental health for children is part of their overall health and is inextricably linked with well-being.

In order to promote positive mental health and well-being at Firies N.S., we have decided to take part in the Amber Flag Initiative. This involves the whole school community coming together in other to create a safe, positive and healthy attitude towards our general physical and mental health and well-being. We have some great ideas on how to do this:

  • Create an Amber Flag notice board - Wellness Wall - in the hall with a positive ‘thought for the week’.
  • Holistic activities undertaken through the SPHE and PE strands of the curriculum.
  • Celebrating World Mental Health Day.
  • Partaking in fun activities during Wellbeing Week that promote positive mental health in our school community.
  • Team building activities.
  • Poster Competition.
  • Visits from inspiring leaders.

In order to undertake all these activities we formed an Amber Flag Committee. This committee is led by student representatives and teacher representatives.

Gaelbhratach

Gaelbhratach

Firies NS is proud to be involved in the Gaelbhratach Programme since 2022.

The scheme was established in response to the need to create natural opportunities to speak Irish outside of the formal classroom setting. The scheme officially began at primary level in the 2012/13 school year. In the years since, the scheme has worked with every kind of school in all corners of the country.

Firies NS has received a ‘Teastas’ from the programme, signalling successful completion of Year 1.  We are now entering into Year 2 of Gaelbhratach and we are working towards our first flag. Staff and students at Firies NS are very enthusiastic about this programme. We have established a Coiste for staff members and students. We meet regularly to discuss ways we can improve and promote Gaeilge in our school. Everyone is involved in this programme.

Thus far:

We have learnt Amhrán Na bhFiann and performed it outdoors as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2023.  https://fb.watch/npFCeLbBGg/

We partner older classes with younger classes to practice our comhrá Gaeilge. We have agreed Feidhmeanna Teanga for each class level so we always know the standard of Irish we are trying to reach for our class group.

We make Irish dramas/films. Click on the link to watch ‘Maidin Mhaith’ starring Senior Infants 2022/2023.  https://fb.watch/npFInq_DL3/

Ní neart go chur le chéile!

Keep an eye on this page for further updates!

Visual Arts

Visual Arts

Each child possesses a range of intelligences and he/she needs a variety of learning experiences in order to develop them fully. Visual Arts activities enable children to make sense of and to express their world in visual, tangible form. They can also be unifying forces in children's learning and development: drawing, painting, inventing and constructing bring together different elements of children's experience from which a whole new experience can develop. Understanding visual imagery opens additional ways of learning for children and enables them to record real or imagined ideas and feelings. Opportunities to explore and investigate the visual elements in their environment help them to appreciate the nature of things and to channel their natural curiosity for educational ends. The confidence and enjoyment that stem from purposeful Visual Arts activities can have a positive effect on children's learning in other areas of the curriculum. Learning in and through art can contribute positively to children's sense of personal and cultural identity and to their whole development.

Irish Film Award 2019

IRISH FILM AWARDS

WINNERS!

Some of our musically talented teachers wrote a song in Irish, An Gaeilge Abú, to accompany the music to the brush dance. John Foley, Cosmo Video Productions, did a superb job capturing the children brush dancing as well as recording the song. We entered the video in an Irish film competition run by Conradh na Gaeilge and funded by Kerry County Council. This competition was for all Primary and Post Primary schools in Ireland. There was a prize of €1000 for the overall winner at each county. I am delighted to announce that Firies N.S. won this very prestigious prize. Congratulations to all our children and staff and a special thanks to John Foley.
