School Garden at Firies National School

How delighted we were at Firies National School to be chosen to pilot a food growing and research programme in 2019. The initiative, Grow at School is examining the impact of food growing on primary schools and their students over the course of 3 years (2019-2021). As we have always been passionate about our school garden in Firies, we were delighted to support this research project. We have witnessed first-hand how food growing instils an appreciation and understanding of food in our students and can help them to live healthier and more sustainable lives.
Through Grow at School, our school receives vegetable garden kits, a school garden plan and lots of curriculum resources annually. It is safe to say that our school garden is in very safe hands! Last September, after a busy growing season, we decided to use our garden produce to make some delicious Vegetable Soup for all our students and staff. What an adventure! And as if that wasn’t enough, we also made Chocolate Beetroot Cake for everyone!! All the ingredients came from our school garden, except for the chocolate of course. We had potatoes, carrots, parsnips, celeriac, onions, radishes, turnips, peas, broad beans and mini beets!! Have a look at some of our photographs below.
